Located in Houstons Energy Corridor, the center neighbors the nations leading petroleum engineering universities, labs, manufacturers, and service companies.Basic FunctionThe candidate will conduct comprehensive geophysical studies and analyses related to hydrocarbon exploration, and prepare appropriate reports. Must be capable of working alone or with a group to develop timely and reliable solutions to geophysical problems and to implement these solutions or recommend appropriate action, depending on the circumstances. Must have substantial expertise in one or more of the geophysical disciplines used in hydrocarbon exploration.Duties & ResponsibilitiesConceive, design and carry out applied geophysical research to resolve technical problemsApply best practices and transfers emerging technologies to support Aramcos leading position as an energy providerSelect algorithms, software, and workflows as well as approaches to integrate with other technologiesDevelop algorithms and software in areas of research based on technology needs as expressed by business proponents in Dhahran and in alignment with Technology LeaderDevelop near- and longer-term research projects to address current operational needs while building fundamental knowledge and capabilities to support more advanced research objectivesDefine steps for project developmentPrepare and make presentations to management or the government, illustrating different geophysical problems and presenting conclusions or recommendations that have a high probability of improving results or resolving those problemsAdvise management on continuing needs for updates to project plans to ensure alignment with proponent operating plans and to ensure that all projects are consistent with business and technological objectivesPrepare written reports on geophysical or computational procedures or activities, where advanced level judgment is required to evaluate potential applications to SAO exploration objectivesPrepare and make presentations to management, for the company and government agencies, if warranted, illustrating different geophysical problems, results, and conclusionsPrepare and deliver technical presentations and write papers for peer-reviewed journals on research projectsMay be on peer review committees for journals and conferencesEvaluate major long-term trends in area of expertise and advise management on application of new technologiesServe as a conduit of technology transfer in area of expertise Education And ExperienceBachelors degree in Geophysics or related field required; Master's degree in Geophysics, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or a related science/engineering strongly preferred; graduate study in a specialized discipline of Geophysics, a related science or other extended special training is desirable; advanced degree strongly desired.Minimum of nine (9) years experience in Petroleum Geophysics or other discipline appropriate to the task is required; an advanced degree will reduce work experience requirement by one yearComprehensive knowledge of:Relevant oil and gas industry practices including velocity model building, imaging, large-scale optimization, velocity analysis, signal processingNumerical methods for solving partial differential equations, iterative methods for solving large-scale linear system, understanding of the properties of wave propagation in various mediaConstitutive relations in viscoelastic and anisotropic media is a mustConcepts of machine learningLarge-scale production software development for seismic simulation including Message Passing Interface (MPI) and OpenMPInput and output data format commonly used in oil industryPetrophysics, reservoir models, production monitoring, and seismic data pre-processing workflows is preferredInterpretation, well-log analysis, petroleum geology, and stratigraphy is preferred.Proficiency in one of such languages such as MATLAB, Python, R, FORTRAN, C/C++, or Java is a mustSolid concept of software development including object-oriented programming and development/deployment is preferableAbility to:independently develop new algorithms and implement parallel software for seismic data processing/modeling/inversionconsistently demonstrate the ability to make reliable and accurate decisions and to develop sound conclusions and recommendationsshow a track record of publications in peer reviewed journals (strongly preferred)demonstrate proficiency with high-end workstations or high-performance clustersconduct geophysical analysesprepare highly technical reports and memorandaconstantly learn new emerging technologies and apply them to new applicationsfollow technology development in consortia and industryeffectively collaborate with researchers and technicians in a multi-cultural and interdisciplinary team environmentProficient with business software applicationsTypically, at least eight years of experience in subsurface geophysical applications. Practical experience in production is preferable, in particular in borehole geophysics.
